In Italy, macaroni is a type of pasta that is used as a source of carbohydrates which has the same function as rice in Indonesia. Baked Macaroni and Cheese appeared because of a Dutch who settled in Indonesia in the mid-19th century. In Netherlands, it's also known as Macaroni Schotel. Schotel can be interpreted as a container used to bake macaroni. The Dutch like to cook this dish because it is not difficult and can provide the nutrients needed by the body (the contents of the macaroni schotel contain milk, cheese, ham, meat, and other nutrients. But in European countries, Baked Macaroni and Cheese is used as the main dish, they call it Macaroni Casserole. The Dutch introduced food to Indonesians. However, because the ingredients for making grilled macaroni were expensive at that time and they were not used to eating wheat, only the elite class could make Baked Macaroni and Cheese. But for now, almost anyone can make grilled macaroni. Usually, grilled macaroni is served when there are certain events, for example during Indonesian independence day and other holidays. The contents of Baked Macaroni and Cheese can be sausage, ham, cheese, milk, meat, etc. This food can be enjoyed by all ages, as a main dish or an afternoon snack.
Boil the macaroni with 1000 ml of water, and add cooking oil so that the macaroni is not sticky. Stir well and boil for about 10 minutes, then remove the macaroni from the boiling water. Make sure the macaroni is not tough and not too mushy.
Prepare a container/bowl, and add the eggs, liquid milk, flour, whip cream, salt, pepper, oregano, and nutmeg powder. Stir well.
Turn on the oven at 170°C. Prepare a baking sheet measuring 20x20 cm, and spread butter on the bottom of the pan. Then put boiled macaroni, sausage, and ham in sequence.
Arrange the cheese slices on top, then sprinkle with the grated cheese as in the photo.
Pour the liquid mixture that we made earlier into the pan.
Place the pan in the oven for 30 minutes.
When done, remove from oven, then sprinkle with grated cheese.
Wait 10-15 minutes, then cut it as desired, and the grilled macaroni is ready to eat!
