Whether you're a seasoned cook or a beginner, this recipe is designed for convenience without compromising on flavor. Kushikatsu is a Japanese dish that consists of skewered and deep-fried foods. The term "kushikatsu" can be broken down into two parts: "kushi," which means skewer, and "katsu," which is short for "katsuretsu," meaning cutlet. In Kushikatsu, various ingredients are skewered on bamboo sticks, coated in a seasoned breadcrumb or batter, and deep-fried until golden brown. Kushikatsu can feature a variety of ingredients, including meats like chicken, beef, or pork, as well as vegetables such as onions, mushrooms, or potatoes. Seafood like shrimp or fish can also be used. The skewered ingredients are coated in a batter or breadcrumbs before frying. The coating provides a crispy texture, which is the main characteristic of Kushikatsu. Kushikatsu is traditionally served with a dipping sauce called "tare." Tare is a savory-sweet sauce that adds flavor to the fried skewers. The exact composition of the tare can vary, but it often includes ingredients like oyster sauce, sake, mirin (sweet rice wine), sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Take a look at our Kushikatsu recipe that's easy to follow.
